Your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) carries an expiry date, and renewing on time matters — a lapse can interrupt your continuity of residence and complicate everything downstream. Here's how to stay ahead of it.

You can apply to renew in the 60 days before your card expires, and there's a grace window of up to 90 days after — but don't rely on it. Renewing within the pre-expiry window keeps your status clean.
How renewal works
- Submit the renewal application for your permit type (often online via SEDE Electrónica with a digital certificate).
- Pay the fee (Modelo 790 Código 012).
- Once approved, book the fingerprinting (huella) appointment to issue the new physical card.
- Collect your renewed TIE.
Need to travel while it's processing?
If your TIE has expired and you have travel booked, apply for an autorización de regreso (form EX-13) — a short-term document that lets you re-enter Spain while your renewal is in progress.
After five years: go permanent
Once you reach five years of continuous legal residence, consider Larga Duración — permanent residence ends the renewal treadmill. Pathway can pre-fill the EX-11.
