Spain's Digital Nomad Visa: requirements, income & the Beckham tax

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), created by the 2022 Startups Law, lets remote workers and freelancers with foreign clients live in Spain for up to five years — with a flat 24% tax option for up to four years. It's become one of the most popular routes for non-EU professionals.

Who qualifies for the DNV?

  • You work remotely for a non-Spanish employer, or freelance with mostly non-Spanish clients (Spanish-sourced income capped at 20%).
  • Monthly income of at least ~€2,762 (roughly 200% of Spain's minimum wage / SMI for 2026).
  • A university degree OR at least three years of relevant professional experience.
  • Clean criminal record and private health insurance with full Spanish cover.

Income requirement, exactly

The threshold is pegged to the SMI: about €2,762/month for the main applicant, with uplifts for dependants (roughly +75% SMI for a spouse, +25% per additional family member). Show it with employment contracts, payslips and bank statements.

Inside Spain vs from your home country

Applying from outside Spain via consulate is faster (often 10–20 working days) but typically gives a one-year initial permit. Applying from inside Spain via the UGE-CE grants up to a three-year permit, but processing is slower and your 90/180 Schengen clock keeps ticking. Pathway's diagnostic recommends the right path for your situation.

The Beckham Law (24% flat tax)

DNV holders can elect the special expat regime — a flat 24% on Spanish-source income up to €600,000 for up to four years — provided you weren't Spanish tax resident in the prior five years. The election must be made within six months of starting Spanish tax residence.
